SPSS Worksheet

Work through the following questions using the SPSS Help Manual to become familiar with SPSS operations. This is a practice worksheet and no marks will be assigned.

1. The following data represent ten observations on the amount of October snow cover for Eurasia during the years 1980 - 1989 (in million km2):

6.5 14.9 10.0 10.7 7.9 1.9 12.5 14.5 9.2

Enter these values into an SPSS file. Name the variable SNOW and specify it as numeric with one decimal place. Save your data in a file called Snowdat.sav

2. In double-checking my notes with the original data source, I found two errors:

  1. a case is missing - the second entry should be 12.0. Insert the new observation.
  2. the number 1.9 should be 21.9 - change the entry. Save your changes.

3. Sort the data from lowest to highest.

4. Prepare a histogram of your data. Label the histogram: October Snow Cover for Eurasia: 1980 to 1989. Print the histogram.

5. Enter the following data in a new file. Specify the variables accordingly.

Class Depth (m)
1 6.751
6 8.492
6 23.678
7 72.479
8 2.310
3 64.343
6 97.434

6. Use the calculator functions in SPSS to:

  1. multiply the depth by a constant value (5) and save the new variable.
  2. square the values in column 1 and save the new variable.
  3. prepare a scatterplot of Class (Y axis) vs Depth (X axis).

7. Use the remaining lab time to explore the SPSS menu.
